The newer modes of information transfer- as compared to what?
Is it thicker; by virtue of its breadth, or thinner, for being diffuse? Is the data stream 'deeper' or 'wider,' than was once the case?
Retention, (at least for the majority of us, whose indices lie near to the mean) remains the limiting factor with any data. Of course your computer archives it just fine, but that doesn't mean that you can ' think' with it…

We've all got to swing around various fulcra in our lives; circumstances which seem hopelessly beyond our control direct so many of our responses. The sad fact is that most of us, bereft of anything to worry about, will invent something. That is probably so that we can remain pre-occupied and ignore any more odious issues.

Throughout recorded history, and doubtless earlier as well, some repetitive, almost hypnotic pastime or discipline has soothed many a ravaged psyche. Be it chanting, hymning, meditation, solitaire, or even pinball, a large proportion of the race do indulge.
New modes invent themselves as by-products of social peristalsis. . .But some themes remain.
There must be noise. Music, or at least sounds of some sort, often accompany the mind-numbing pursuits.
There must be visual non-cues. Flashing lights, traditional candle, the smoke curling from incense, channels randomly switching, or your 'screen saver.'
A light source with a flickering basis that is somewhat divisible by whatever frequencies are hypnotic to the subject is a common component.
Strange- computers and their monitors do many, if not all, of these things!Are computers toys or tools?
Toy weapons remain the rage with the young male set, and dollies hold their social niche with a tenacity equalled only by the 'recent' advent of television. The present body of knowledge around the subject seems to infer that at least a portion of this response is genetically encoded. How much? Much controversy, anyway.
But high-tech comm. and data-dicing don't seem to polarize along the classic sex and situational strata. What diffracts the early adopters from the neo-Luddites? It certainly seems as though every which sort of human being is represented in the 'Net!11/2/95
